Diagnosis & Symptoms FAQs

How is vein disease diagnosed?

Vein disease is most often diagnosed with a physical exam and venous ultrasound. At The Vein Guys, every ultrasound is performed in-house by a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT). This advanced imaging test looks for blood clots and checks for venous reflux—a key indicator of chronic venous insufficiency.

Can spider veins indicate a more serious condition?

Yes. While spider veins are often cosmetic, they can also signal underlying venous insufficiency. Many patients are surprised to learn that spider veins may be linked to deeper vein disease. A venous ultrasound is the best way to confirm.

What are the symptoms of vein disease?

Common signs include:
– Bulging, rope-like varicose veins
– Achy, heavy, or swollen legs
– Itching, burning, or throbbing sensations
– Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)
– Skin discoloration or non-healing wounds on the legs or ankles

Even without visible veins, these symptoms may suggest vein disease and should be evaluated by a vein specialist.

Treatments options faqs

What is the Venefit™ Procedure?

We treat both medical and cosmetic vein conditions, including:
– Varicose veins
– Spider veins
– Chronic venous insufficiency
– Venous reflux disease
– Leg pain, swelling, and fatigue
– Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)
– Skin ulcers and discoloration

Our minimally invasive procedures include:
Venefit™ Procedure (formerly VNUS Closure™)
Sclerotherapy for spider veins
Microphlebectomy for varicose veins

All care is tailored to each patient’s needs and performed by board-certified physicians.

Can spider veins indicate a more serious condition?

Venefit™ is a radiofrequency ablation treatment that safely closes diseased veins. Compared to vein stripping, it’s less invasive, well-tolerated, and offers faster recovery. The Vein Guys are nationally recognized experts in this procedure.

What should I expect during my first visit?

During your consultation:
1. We review your symptoms and medical history.
2. A certified RVT may perform a venous ultrasound.
3. At follow-up, your physician explains results and creates a personalized treatment plan.

Insurance & Cost faqs

Will insurance cover vein treatment?

In many cases, yes—especially if symptoms include leg pain, swelling, or ulcers. Medicare and most major insurance providers cover treatments considered medically necessary.

Some insurers may require a 6–12 week conservative management period, which may include compression stockings, exercise, or leg elevation.

Our insurance team will verify your benefits and handle all required documentation.

Do you see patients without insurance?

Absolutely! We have flexible payment plans and no-interest financing options available to cover the cost of your treatment, from start to finish.

After your consultation and ultrasound, our medical staff will discuss your treatment options with you and help you decide what is best for you.

recovery & aftercare faqs

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that appear blue or purple on the legs when faulty valves cause blood to pool. They can be painful and are a visible sign of chronic venous insufficiency.

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are small red, blue, or purple veins near the skin’s surface. While often cosmetic, they may be linked to deeper vein disease if accompanied by swelling, aching, or heaviness.

Is vein treatment painful?

Most procedures, including Venefit™ and sclerotherapy, are minimally invasive and well-tolerated. They’re performed in-office with little to no downtime.

How long is recovery after vein treatment?

Most patients return to daily activity within 24–48 hours. You may be asked to wear compression stockings temporarily and avoid strenuous exercise for a short time.
