Person holding their leg in pain while walking outdoors | Leg pain and vein disease blog | The Vein Guys (board-certified vein specialists)

That nagging ache, heavy feeling, or night-time twitching can drain your energy fast. If you’re on your feet (or in a chair) for long stretches, it’s easy to blame “a long day.” But persistent leg pain can be a sign of an underlying issue—sometimes vein-related—and it’s worth getting checked.

At The Vein Guys, board-certified physicians perform all procedures, and every ultrasound is done by certified RVTs. We focus on minimally invasive care to help you get back to work, family, and the activities you love.

Signs it’s time to see a vein specialist

1. Pain that sticks around or gets worse

If rest, elevation, or OTC meds haven’t helped after 1–2 weeks—or the pain is intensifying—schedule an evaluation.

2. Visible changes in your legs:

  • Swelling, especially in one leg, or swelling with redness or warmth.

  • Skin color changes, like darkening, redness, or a bluish tint.

  • Skin texture changes, such as thickening, hardening, or new sores near the ankles.

  • Varicose veins, bulging or twisted veins you can see and feel.

  • Spider veins, web-like clusters; often cosmetic, but sometimes linked to deeper issues.

3. Heavy, tired, or achy legs

A “weighted” feeling—especially toward day’s end—can point to poor circulation from chronic venous insufficiency.

4. Restless legs at night

That urge to move, sometimes with tingling or crawling sensations. Restless legs have many causes, but can overlap with vein problems.

5. Leg pain that limits daily life

If walking, standing, sitting through meetings, sleeping, or exercising is tough, it’s time to be seen.

Emergency symptoms: If you have sudden leg swelling with chest pain or shortness of breath, call 911 or go to the ER.

When vein disease might be the cause

Chronic venous insufficiency can lead to:

  • Aching, heaviness, or cramping.

  • Swelling around the ankles and calves.

  • Itching and skin changes near the lower legs.

  • Varicose and spider veins.

Early diagnosis helps manage symptoms, reduce progression, and lower the risk of skin breakdown. (Educational only; a physician must make the diagnosis.)

What to expect at a vein evaluation

  • Conversation about your symptoms and routine (standing, sitting, lifting, pregnancy history, family history.)

  • In-office venous ultrasound, performed by a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT)

  • Personalized plan from a board-certified physician

    • Conservative steps (compression, elevation, activity changes)

    • Office-based treatments when appropriate (e.g., sclerotherapy, thermal or chemical ablation)

Good to know: Our procedures are minimally invasive and generally well-tolerated, with little to no downtime for most patients.

Simple relief tips you can try now

  • Take movement breaks every 30–60 minutes (calf raises, ankle circles.)

  • Elevate legs above heart level for 10–15 minutes.

  • Wear graduated compression stockings (we’ll help with fit.)

  • Stay hydrated; limit prolonged heat exposure if swelling flares.

  • Choose supportive footwear for long standing days.

These tips aren’t a substitute for care—book a visit if symptoms persist.

FAQs

Is leg pain always vein-related?
No. Muscles, joints, nerves, and circulation can all play a role. An exam and, if needed, an ultrasound help pinpoint the cause.

When should I seek urgent care?
If you have sudden leg swelling with chest pain, shortness of breath, or coughing up blood, seek emergency care immediately.

Will I need time off work after treatment?
Most vein procedures are office-based with little to no downtime. Your doctor will give you personalized guidance.

Do compression stockings help?
Yes—when properly fitted, they may reduce swelling and discomfort. They’re often part of your initial care plan.

Are treatments covered by insurance?
Medically necessary vein treatments are often covered. Cosmetic-only concerns (like small spider veins) may not be. We’ll verify your benefits before treatment.
